“Labor Day” is based on the novel by author Joyce Maynard. It tells the story of Henry, a man in his early 30s, who recounts his thirteenth year. Told through the eyes of the 13-year-old Henry, who spends most of his time daydreaming or watching TV, and set on a late summer Labor Day holiday weekend in the 1980s. Henry and his divorced, heartbroken, and depressed single mom (Kate Winslet) who encounters a large, bleeding man named Frank (James Brolin) while shopping. He asks for a ride and against their better judgment, they agree. Meanwhile, they learn that police are searching their town for an escaped convict. This mysterious man admits that he is a convicted murderer who has escaped prison. Despite his past, Frank makes the claim that the mother and son have “never been in better hands”. Indeed, Frank teaches Henry how to throw a baseball, change a flat tire and to bake. Henry bonds with and eventually falls for Frank’s 14 year-old daughter Eleanor, meanwhile Adele and Frank, long love-starved, become infatuated with each other, and Adele emerges from her depression.

Four-time Academy Award nominated filmmaker Jason Reitman will direct “Labor Day” from an adapted screenplay that he wrote himself. The film marks the fourth collaboration for Jason Reitman and Paramount. His latest film “Young Adult,” starring Charlize Theron, hit theaters on December 9, 2011. The studio previously released his Academy-Award nominated “Up in the Air” in 2010. Earning over $160 million world-wide, the movie earned six Academy-Award nominations, and five Golden Globe nominations, with Reitman taking home the Golden Globe for Best Adapted Screenplay.

“Labor Day” will be produced by Academy Award – nominated producers Lianne Halfon and Russell Smith of Mr. Mudd Productions, along with Jason Reitman and Helen Estabrook of Right of Way Films. Story:

With the end of summer closing in and a steamy Labor Day weekend looming in the town of Holton Mills, New Hampshire, thirteen-year-old Henry – lonely, friendless, not too good at sports – spends most of his time watching television, reading, and daydreaming about the soft skin and budding bodies of his female classmates. For company Henry has his long-divorced mother, Adele (Kate Winslet) – a onetime dancer whose summer project was to teach him how to foxtrot; his hamster, Joe; and awkward Saturday-night outings to Friendly’s with his estranged father and new step family. As much as he tries, Henry knows that even with his jokes and his “Husband for a Day” coupon, he still can’t make his emotionally fragile mother happy. Adele has a secret that makes it hard for her to leave their house, and seems to possess an irreparably broken heart. But all that changes on the Thursday before Labor Day, when a mysterious bleeding man named Frank (Josh Brolin) approaches Henry and asks for a hand. Over the next five days, Henry will learn some of life’s most valuable lessons: how to throw a baseball, the secret to perfect piecrust, the breathless pain of jealousy, the power of betrayal, and the importance of putting others-especially those we love-above ourselves. And the knowledge that real love is worth waiting for.
