“The Hunger Games” star and Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence is reteaming with “The Silver Linings Playbook” co-star Bradley Cooper in the upcoming major feature film “Serena”. Casting for the film’s co-starring and supporting roles is currently underway in Los Angeles. Filming on “Serena” begins in Prague, Czech Republic on March 26, 2012. The movie’s extras, stand-ins, and photo doubles will all be hired in the Czech Republic.
“Serena” tells the tale of young newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton (played by Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence), who move to North Carolina in 1929 with the aim to build a timber empire. Given Serena’s ruthless ambition, they’re cut-throat business types – anyone who gets in their way is either ruined or killed. When Serena discovers that not only is she infertile, but that her husband has an illegitimate son – who she decides must die.
Award winning Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier will direct “Serena” from an adapted screenplay written by Christopher Kyle. The script is based on the 2008 novel by Ron Rash, who’s family has lived in the southern Appalachian Mountains since the mid-1700’s, and it is this region that is the primary focus of his writing. His poetry and fiction have appeared in over one hundred journals, magazines, and anthologies
Billionaire entrepreneurs Todd Wagner and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban are producing “Serena” under the banner of their company, 2929 Productions. The husband-and-wife team of Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz are producing for their powerhouse production company, Chockstone Pictures, which has over a dozen additional film projects in development. Nick Wechsler Productions rounds out the production companies. Wechsler also produced “The Time Traveler’s Wife”.
Filming on “Serena” will take place at Barrandov Studios in Prague, Czech Republic. The studio is the largest film studio in the country and one of the largest in Europe. Several of the movies filmed there have won Academy Awards. At present the studios are often called the “European Hollywood” or “Hollywood of the East” due to increasing interest of western productions (such as the movies Mission Impossible, The Bourne Identity, Casino Royale, Prince Caspian, and many others). Ten sound stages are located on the Barrandov Studios Lot. Along with the sound stages is the directly adjoining backlot, which has an area of over 190,000 square yards.

Story:
“Serena” centers on a man named George Pemberton (Bradley Cooper) and his new bride, Serena (Jennifer Lawrence), as they set out to depression-era North Carolina to create a timber empire. Their successful, ruthless reign in the mountains becomes complicated when Serena discovers her inability to bear children, setting her on a vengeful path against George’s illegitimate son. After Serena saves the life of a a vicious Appalachian guide named Galloway (Rhys Ifans), he becomes her muscle and right-hand man – while her husband George is being pursued by determined Sheriff McDowell (Toby Jones). Infidelity and the infertility leads Serena to plot the murder of George’s illegitimate son while attempting to keep their timber land from being taken by the government.
