The upcoming independent dark teen comedy feature film “Spring Breakers” is currently auditioning actors in Los Angeles for lead roles and supporting roles. Smaller roles and extras will be cast in St Petersburg, Florida where shooting will take place beginning in March, 2012. The movie is about four female college students who attempt to pay for their spring break trip by robbing a restaurant, and end up getting busted. Academy Award nominated actor James Franco plays a rapping drug dealer who bails the girls out and persuades them to help him kill his rival dealer.
Starring with Franco are the former Disney Channel starlets Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens, who play two of the four college students. Emma Roberts was set to also play one of the leads, but pulled out of the project due to reported “creative differences”. Roberts instead will star in the comedy feature film “Adult World”. Ashley Benson, star of the ABC Family series ““Pretty Little Liars” has replaced Emma Roberts. Gomez will play “the conservative girl,” Hudgens revealed that she becomes lovers with Franco’s character and “gets to kiss him”. Rachel Korine, who is the wife of the “Spring Breakers” director, will co-star. “Glee” star Heather Morris has also joined the cast.
Harmony Korine, who is best known for writing “Kids” and for directing “Gummo,” “Julien Donkey-Boy” and “Mister Lonely”, will direct “Spring Breakers” from a screenplay that he wrote himself. Korine has been a prominent figure in independent film, music and art throughout the past decade. His latest film “Trash Humpers” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the main prize, the DOX Award. He has also won several other Film Festival awards and has been nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards.
MJZ President David Zander will produce “Spring Breakers” with Chris Hanley of Muse Productions, as well as Charles-Marie Anthonioz. Anthonioz is a Sorbonne-educated Parisian who runs and produces movies for O’Salvation Cine Limited, a production company co-founded in London in 2002 by French designer agnès b. and Harmony Korine. Creative Artists Agency (CAA) packaged the project and will represent domestic distribution rights, as the powerhouse agency also represents Korine, Franco, Roberts, Hudgens and Gomez.
